6mm-Minis

6mm-Minis is Maksim-Smelchak's blog to discuss gaming, miniatures, books, movies, food, Israel, Judaism, life in general and other funny crud. My favorite scale of miniatures is 6mm, which is also called 1/285 or 1/300 scale. I enjoy many different kinds of games including ancients, Napoleonics, WWI, WWII, the Arab-Israeli conflict, Car Wars AKA Autoduel (a sort of crash'n'derby automobile combat game), 6mm Godzilla AKA Kaiju games, and science fiction games. I'm open to everything though!

GAMING NEWS: "Gygax Gone" (6 March 2008)

TOP: Gary Gygax Passes Away. RIP. (4 March 2008).

Hi All,

Like alot of folks out there, I was a big Geek growing up in the 70s and 80s. Games and particularly fantasy RPGs (Role Playing Games) were huge. I studied Mythology and D&D side by side... I figured the 1rst Edition Monster Manual was at least as good as Edith Hamilton, D'Aulaires, or Bullfinch (...big mythology names).

And just the other day ago, we lost one of the big names who helped put fantasy RPGs on the map, Gary Gygax. It's pretty hard for us early D&D maniacs to imagine a D&D without Gygax... he wrote so many early novels, rule books, and left the mark of his distinctive prose across so many fun fantasy products. He could be controversial too... and he wasn't always known for being kind to his partners. I've had a chance to meet Dave Arneson, one of those legendary early partners, and it's hard to imagine D&D without those early Titans of the RPG industry. I also got to meet Gygax at a gaming convention way back when and I'm glad I had the chance to thank him. My childhood friend Ian Hess and I used to think of him as a missing entry from the 1rst Edition Deities & Demigods book...

Rather than wax on, I'm going to leave you with a few words and two links, one from TMP, and the other from Jeff Rients, who has some excellent advice how to celebrate Gygax's life.

So first my words and then the links.

For good and bad, thank you, Gary Gygax!
May you keep rolling 20's in a a better place!
Rest in Peace.

FUN VIDEOS: "Star Wars According To a 3-year-old" (26 February 2008)

Hi All,

I've really fallen behind on blog updates... still trying to find a new job. The search is really chewing up my free time.

And now I'm on Jury Duty for a week or two...

I've been mostly working on 28mm pirates and ships, but this past Sunday, I got to play in a CoC (Call of Cthulhu) RPG game and really enjoyed it.

Several of my friends sent me the above video "Star Wars according to a 3 year old," which I though was pretty classic. Enjoy!

Have a great Tuesday!

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

GAMING NEWS: "Wide, Wide World of Savage Zombies" (Savage Worlds Zombie Game 7-15-2007)

.TOP: We all had a good time playing board games and RPGs!

Hi All,

So, there we were about two weeks ago... E-mailing each other back and forth and wanting to get a new game together. John the "Reapersaurus" wanted to play board games, Anne wanted to be creative with a role-playing game (RPG), Kelley also wanted an RPG, Rob wanted to bring the family, Pat was indifferent, and I just wanted to visit with some of my friends and share a few choice games with them. So, finally we all agreed that most of the adults would play an RPG and the rest would play board games with the kids... So, which RPG do you choose for a group that goes by the name "Cannibal Pygmy Discussion Group?" A zombie game, of course! We talked about playing "All Flesh Must Be Eaten," but eventually "Savage Worlds" won out.

TOP: I brought some 28mm zombie minis, but we didn't need them after all.

So, eventually, Patrick, the creator of Monster Island and head honcho of Firefly Games (link on right sidebar), and our gamemaster (GM), sent us this teaser, a radio short:

It's just another weekday morning. You are on your way to St. Mary's Medical Center in downtown San Francisco, across from Golden Gate Park. You might work or volunteer at the hospital, or you might be visiting a patient. Or perhaps you're meeting a friend who's an employee for coffee, or you have a business appointment of some kind. Or possibly you're scheduled for outpatient testing or rehab therapy.

In any case, at some point in the course of your morning routine - whether it's hitting the snooze button on your clock radio, brushing your teeth, eating breakfast, or driving, walking, or riding the bus to the hospital - you hear the following news report:

"... latest casualties from Iraq. On a lighter note, no one was injured early this morning when a malfunctioning satellite crashed to Earth in the parking lot of a downtown San Francisco bowling alley during an all-night bowl-a-thon. Guess you'd call that a lucky strike!"

"Coming up after the break, today's weather and traffic together..."

And what gaming group doesn't come up with a few house rules:

Cool! I think the one change I will make is to allow bennies to be spent also to gain a 'lucky break,' basically a minor plot twist a la Faery's Tale.

"Hey, that zombie janitor we just killed has the key-card to this door!"

And the cool thing about Savage Worlds is that they offer a free 'Test Drive' PDF if folks want to take a gander at it before playing:
http://www.peginc. com/Games/ Savage%20Worlds/ Downloads/ SW%20Rev/ TestDrive4. pdf

TOP: What else were you expecting to find in the house of a guy nicknamed "Reapersaurus?"

So, next thing I know, we're discussing character creation like crazy, everyone coming with ideas of what kind of character they wanted to play.

Anne's character ideas were particularly "fertile" as is her norm:

I think my character will be an art student attending the Art Institute in SF. She lives with a roommate in those homes that are embedded on a side of hill (only healthy people and mountain goats can get to these places). This roommate recently completed his--uh her transgender
surgery and so she's visiting her roommate who is recuperating from said surgery. In order to make ends meet, she works a few jobs: one at Stacey's Books on Market, and then another as a clerk of the concession counter at the Power Exchange, a club for the "adults only." Her senior project is nearly complete, and was inspired by her second job. Entitled "Spare the Rod, Spoil the Evening," her project is a series of abstract mixed-media pieces that are constructed on canvas with spackle, leather, PVC pipe, licorice and "found" fast food packaging.

She is also interested in performance art that involves physical exertion (...inspired by artists like Matthew Barney), so she will have some strength and agility. One of her pieces involving this medium was purchased for $10,000 USD. It was entitled "Untitled" and involved her mounting a trampoline in front of a wall covered with canvas. She proceeded to paint her hindquarters different colors, bounced backwards, and stamped her colorful cheeks onto the canvas. She broke two ribs in the process. Therefore, her payment for the piece went towards medical care costs. So there ya have it.

Since children are present, we won't go into detail about her second job during game play, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to develop a colorful San Francisco resident, in addition to lampooning modern art.

And the funny thing is that anyone who's been to Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco has walked by the "Art Institute" that inspired Anne. I'd say "you can't make that stuff up," BUT Anne did! ...and it is San Francisco we're talking about.

TOP: Anne, Rob, Kelley and Pat playing the zombie RPG.

And if you don't think San Francisco is a CRAZY place, please check out this link, appropriately called "Zombie Time" ("The Hall of Shame" is particularly disturbing):
http://www.zombietime.com/

While Rob's ideas came in the form of a cool little short story:

"Oh damn! Another one? Hit the sirens Sara."

"You got it Trevor."

The ambulance's sirens and lights came to life as Trevor romped on the gas pedal and sped off to the scene of the accident just another day in the life of a paramedic.

Arriving at the scene the found two vehicles badly damaged, one wrapped around a tree the other inserted into its passenger door. The emergency personnel were all on scene already trying to get the bodies out. To the right a man in a nice business suit was bent over the body of a woman giving CPR.

"1... 2... 3..." He blew into her mouth. He obviously knew what he was doing, but wasn't a member of the emergency personnel present.

Trevor and Sara jumped out of the ambulance and seeing no other bodies present rushed to the man's side.

"Move out of the way, we'll take it from here." Trevor told the man as he put his hand on his shoulder.

"Do you have a crash kit with you?" The man in the suit asked."Of course," Trevor answered.

"This woman has gone into cardiac arrest and has two broken ribs, and I think her spleen is ruptured. She's barely holding on.""Who are you?" Sara asked.

"1... 2... 3..." He blew into her mouth again before saying, "The name is Doctor Henry Strats. I'm a doctor at St. Mary's Medical Center.""Ok, doctor we've got it from here." Sara responded as she opened the crash kit and moved in to take over.

Dr. Strats stood up and watched as the paramedics went to work, and then looked around if there was anything else that he could do, but there was little for him that wouldn't require him getting in the way.

Soon additional ambulances arrived and the put the woman on a gurney as two others were pulled from the wreckage of the vehicles.

Jogging over to one of the paramedics he asked, "Can I follow you in? St. Mary's is only a half mile from here. I assume that is where you are going?"

"Sorry, you'll need to stay back and drive a safe speed. Don't worry we'll take good care of her." They hit their sirens and lights and sped off leaving the doctor to decide what he wanted to do.

He jumped in his car, put it in drive and sped off toward the hospital.

My character is Dr. Henry Strats. A forty-year-old doctor at St. Mary's.

Our final characters ended up a bit different though:

- Dr. J.C. Valmont, medical resident at St. Mary's played by Kelley W.
- Mr. Kevin Harding, fisherman of the Gorton's Fishsticks type, played by Robert.
- Mz. Fawn Schmichaels, grad student, "performance artist," and "Hippie chick" played by Anne F.
- Captain Maxwell S. Black, U.S. Army helicopter pilot played by Maksim S.
- Pat, the ALMIGHTY GM!

TOP: Alexa was the good-natured dog mascot... and seeker of dropped treats.

And we had a few NPCs connected to the backgrounds of our characters:
- Chief Resident (zombie) at St. Mary's, Doctor Herman Proctor.
- Mechanic "Skippy," formerly of the US Army before zombie-dom hit.
- Sandra, the transgender friend of Fawn, and the first "Zomb-IT" in history.
- Nurse Ginger, a friend of Dr. Valmont.

TOP : Zombie nurses are HOT!

And Pat read us the beginning blurb and away we went:

Zombies! starts out at a hospital in downtown San Francisco. Your PCs are employees, medical staff, public safety workers, or just ordinary people visiting patients or at the hospital for some other reason. The theme, as before, is you are everyday people caught at 'ground zero' of the zombie outbreak, and must struggle to survive and reach a place of (relative) safety. If your PC gets killed, you'll just pull another pre-gen from the pile and be another survivor encountered by the party as soon as it's possible to fit you back in.

We started out in an elevator that stopped somewhere in between the fourth and fifth floors of the hospital. Out first action was to crawl out of the elevator onto the fifth floor where we encountered our first zombie, who took quite a beating from the crew... the zombie was whacked with some broomsticks, pushed around, and eventually succumbed to a few bullets from Captain Black's .45 ACP pistol. At that point, the party raided a nurse's station and custodian's closet for supplies... and discovered that the "guts" skill was particularly valuable as half the party was scared witless by some more zombies. After defeating the zombies and nearly having two of the characters bitten, the party decided to make their way to the roof rather than the first floor and dangerous Emergency Room (...which we believed was chocked full of zombies from a local bowling alley).

TOP: Richard Gere might have been in the ER, which stinks...
Because zombie hamsters really suck!

The party made their way to the stairwell and proceeded upwards... rescuing Nurse Ginger along the way and being viciously attacked (...and slowly attacked, they're zombies after all) by some NPC zombies, Chief Resident Zombie Dr. Proctor, Skippy the ex-mechanic zombie, and the "zomb-IT." I could have taken anything but being bitten by the transgender zombie! That would have been awful... eventually we made it to the roof, defeated a few more zombies miraculously and took an emergency services helicopter to the nearby naval air station... hoping that it was not too infested... YET!

The End. Finis!

TOP: Kellog's Zombie Pops, our sponsor for the evening.
"Tastes just like brains! Jingle, jingle. Buy them NOW!"

It was a good time and we all enjoyed it. The kids and adults who didn't play the RPG, played board games all day and we all munched on a variety of cool appetizers as well as some freshly-baked chocolate chip cookies.

TOP: Jennifer, Michael, John, Jacob & Bethany enjoyed board games.

The board games that were played were:
- Apples to Apples, Jr. Edition
- Coloretto
- Elfenland
- There's a Moose In the House
- Tumblin Dice

We also discussed the upcoming "Weird Al" Yankovic concert coming on September 3rd, which reminded me of "Weird Al's" parody of Thriller: "Nature Trail From Hell."

TOP: Sometimes it's hard to tell San Francisco "normal" from "abnormal."

And many many bad zombie jokes were made:
- Zombie Speed Dating:
- "Nothing like eating and running..."
- "He's so tender and full of brains..."
- "Is that performance art?"
- And the infamous transgender "zomb-IT!"

You can see all of the photos I took from that weekend here:

GAMING NEWS: Five Seconds of Fame: Thanks, Jeff!

. Jeff's daughter designed / inspired this awesome Simian Martial Arts Master!

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday, despite a cruddy day at work, I received a very pleasant surprise:

The author of a blog that I absolutely love linked back to my humble little gaming blog here!
Thanks, Jeff!

Find his link here:
http://jrients.blogspot.com/2007/04/im-thinking-of-number-between-4-and-6.html

All I can say is that I'm flattered and honored to be thought worthy.

Jeff has GREAT taste in movies!

Jeff wrote:

6mm Minis - One of my favorite miniatures blogs. Great photos. Not just 6mm scale.

Here's what I think of Jeff and why you should take a gander at his charming little blog when you get a chance:

Jeff Rients has a wonderful sense of whimsy, a great sense of humor and an encyclopedic knowledge of:
- Comic books (particularly wacky ones)
- Classic old RPG (Roleplaying Game) products of the 1970s and 80s
- Classic gaming artists of the 1970s and 80s
(I share his love of good illustrations...)

His blog never fails to amuse and entertain me whether he features:
- Pictures of his kids in Halloween costumes
(...at least I hope the costumes were for Halloween!)
- His whimsical drawings guaranteed to cheer me up
- A sampling from his rather eclectic musical tastes
(...including videos as often as not)
- Yet another mention of STAR WARS
- His really great, engaging writing skills
- Descriptions of his gaming experiences
(...including some pretty wacky-fun RPG campaigns)
- And so much more...

Jeff's mutant Ninja-kin nephew... love his family photos!

And, perhaps, best of all, I love his self description line:

ABOUT ME: Jeff Rients

Farm boy who wanted to grow up, go to the Academy, and join the Rebellion. Ended up a banker instead. Go figure.

Hey, I told you that Jeff has a goofy off color taste in comics...

Have a great Thursday!

Maksim-Smelchak.

GAMING NEWS: ConQuest Sac 2007 Photos Posted!

.
CQ-Sac 2007 attendees enjoying a rousing game of Monster Island!

Hi, Everyone!

I posted photos from the ConQuest-Sac-2007 gaming convention for anyone interested.

*** Warning: ***
Some of the sub-galleries have adult-themed games (strong language, but no nudity other than the occasional naked Pict/Gaul armed with blue war paint and an aim to misbehave). If you have an aversion to adult words, then I recommend you avoid the "Zombietown" sub-gallery. The rest of the galleries and sub-galleries are pretty tame.

You can find them here:
http://s44.photobucket.com/albums/f23/Maksim-Smelchak/ConQuest-Sac-2007/

I posted a few photos of attendees under the root and then subdivided the galleries thematically into:

- CQ-Sac_Board-Games-07
- CQ-Sac_Mini-Games-07
- CQ-Sac_RPGs-07
- CQ-Sac_Staff-07
- CQ-Sac_Vendors-07

And then created some sub-galleries as well:

CQ-Sac_Board-Games-07
- CQ-Sac_ASL-2007
- CQ-Sac_B-17_2007
- CQ-Sac_Twilight-Imperium_07

CQ-Sac_Mini-Games-07
- CQ-Sac_40k-Tourney-07
- CQ-Sac_Air-Games-07
- CQ-Sac_Ancients-07
- CQ-Sac_CMGs-07
- CQ-Sac_Monster-Island-07
- CQ-Sac_Naval-WWII-07
- CQ-Sac_Painting-07
- CQ-Sac_Vietnam-07
- CQ-Sac_Westerns-07
- CQ-Sac_WWII_2007
- CQ-Sac_Zombie-Hunter-07
- CQ-Sac_Zombietown-07

CQ-Sac_RPGs-07
- CQ-Sac_Bob-Serenity-07
- CQ-Sac_Capt-Bob-07
- CQ-Sac_Cthulhu-2007

I wanted to also mention that while I volunteer at the ConQuest-Sac-2007 gaming convention, my photos should not be considered "official" con photos... just the contribution of one gamer to the community.

I hopefully removed all the photos with particularly unflattering poses (always seem to get a few nostril shots no matter how I try). I also deleted all the photos of "The Future Plumbers of America Club"... they simply have attrocious fashion sense (...totally unlike the average gamer, right?)...

An exciting action shot from one of the air wargames at CQ-Sac-2007!

If for any reason, someone has an aversion to a photo (I did ask permission repeatedly all day long), drop me a line and I can remove any offending material. I wouldn't want anyone's mug shot to reach the FBI or America's Most Wanted...

With that said, I hope that everyone enjoys the photos!

I had a great time at the con and hope that everyone else did too!

Wishing everyone well!

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

P.S.
Anyone interested in using photos on their website or elsewhere is welcome to do so. All I ask is that I be credited as the photographer (even the poor photos!)...

P.S.S.
Thanks to Bill at TMP!

.
A view of Serenity with her assembled crew.

Hi Everyone,

Well, Saturday evening has come and gone and what a time it was! Captain Bob came down all the way from sunny San Luis Obispo. Captain Bob put on an amazing show... gamemastering, providing game props for each player, a cool gameboard, prizes, and more.

- KAYLEE FRYE, engineer:
Player: Annie, Prop: wrench (...or was that wench?).

Kaylee AKA Annie, who wore a great costume and was a delighful gamer... Good company! She's also an avid RPG player and a member of the local D&D Meet-up Group.

- JAYNE COBB, soldier:
Player: Richard, Prop: toy rifle & automatic pistol.

Jayne AKA Richard, showing one of his best sides... the other one!
Fun guy. He also plays board games around town.

Player: Steph, Prop: chopsticks of death.

River AKA Steph, with the chopsticks of death move abundantly obvious.

Player: Maksim-Smelchak. Prop: nice signed hardbound edition of RPG gamebook.

- INARA SERRA, passenger:
Player: Off-ship (unplayed).

- All Non-Player Characters (NPCs):
Player: Captain Bob, Props: assorted.

- SERENITY, starship extraordinaire:
A three-level beauty over a fine genuine nagahide black leather tablecloth representing SPACE!

Mighty Serenity, three decks of finely-engineered glory.

- Character Minatures & Other Props:
The better part of an Indian Jones playset, a goofy Dollar Store set of plastic soldiers, some hydrostone crates in the cargo bay, a few 28mm miniatures of Victorian ladies in dresses, and who knows what other gobbledigook.

- MEAL OF THE EVENING:
A delicious spread with plenty for all from Panda... Chinese, of course!

Mmmm, mmmm, Panda for dinner!

BASIC PLOTLINE:
- The crew of the Serenity, Firefly class tramp frieghter, led by Captain Mal Reynolds is hired on fringe planet, "Murphy's Luck," to transport of valuable consignment of "luxury meat" with no questions asked by a certain Mrs. Zayan O'Malley, a petite asian woman of prim and proper dress. Local "fixer" "Badger," sets up a contract for a reasonable price, the crew loads on the "mystery meat" in two large refridgerated units, gets Mrs. O'Malley settled into guest quarters and off the Serenity heads into space with a core planet destination.

Mrs. O'Malley acts very strangely during the voyage, taking meals in her quarters and rarely venturing out for so much as a word. Simon and River notice a strange symbol on a bright red silk bedspread in Mrs. O'Malley's passenger room while bringing her meals. Shepherd Book notices that Mrs. O'Malley sneaks out in the dead of the night to check on the refrigerated units every evening by the clock without exception. Even Jayne senses something amiss inbetween gun cleaning sessions. Meanwhile, Kaylee discovers a number of minor problems with the ship that "just ain't right." And Wash notices that a strange ship seems to be following just out of sensor range, barely flickering onto the screens. All the while, Mal and Zoe have their hands full trying to keep the crew from going stir-crazy.

One evening at supper, the crew gathers for a chat session and begins discussing the situation. They barely get finished announcing that the strange symbol on Mrs. O'Malley's bedspread is the gang symbol of "The Black Dragons," an underworld mafia group... WHEN all of a sudden things on the ship "go bonkers"... life supports fails, artificial gravity begins malfunctioning and a darn fine dinner is disrupted. Simon and River are downstairs delivering a meal to Mrs. O'Malley when the strangeness hits... Mal heads up to assist Wash in the cockpit, Kaylee heads back to the engine room, Shepherd Book and Jayne head down to the cargo bay and... Zoe continues eating... nothing is going to "damn well disturb her fine eat'in."

Captain Bob and Gale, his lovely companion.

Mal and Wash find that the ship is now being closely followed by a strange pursuer and attempt to dodge the offensely-postured stranger by whipping into an asteroid field and attempting to lose him. Kalee discovers evidence of massive sabotage throughout the ship and begins repairs. Meanwhile down below, Mrs. O'Malley quickly grabs a heavy crystal paperweight with malice in her eyes and gives Simon a good "clocking" upside the head, but River is quicker than O'Malley and not only snatches the paperweight from her, but gives her a good knock with the paperweight and promptly knocks her unconscious. Shepherd Book strangley insists that River leave Simon to his care and head to the cargo bay to see her "imaginary friends," but she refuses to leave Simon's side so Jayne and Book decide to check out the strange noises coming from the cargo bay.

Shepherd Book and Jayne bust into a cargo bay that is ALREADY OCCUPIED by a strange armed man and an accomplice. The armed man opens fire and Jayne decides to bullrush the two men and succeeds in knocking them to the floor. BUT, there are two more armed assailants and they open fire wounding Jayne's shoulder. Shepherd Book dives into cover behind some crates. One of the strange men rushes wounded Jayne with a knife and Shepherd Book leaps out with some funky Kung Fu to incapacitate Jayne's attacker. Meanwhile a newly freed-up Jayne, thanks to the Shepherd, pulls out his weapons and cuts down the remaining two strange men with gunfire.

Above decks, River has scampered to the kitchen, gathered some food and prepared to take some more below to poor Simon for no discernable reason when the empty shuttle dock rattles open with more strange men who waste no time in opening fire. Mal joins her in the fight while Kaylee struggles to get the engine running again. Wash barely has time to slingshot around an asteroid avoiding the pursuing ship, BUT, just barely! Simon, downbelow decks, loses gravity and promptly finds himself flailing over the unconscious and abudantly buxom O'Malley. And... Zoe keeps on eating...

Mal manages to take out one of the above decks "baddies" when the other one is knocked aside by a huge Asian man in important-looking silk robes busting out the empy shuttle dock where his pursuing ship had docked and announces that he is the leader of "The White Dragons," a vigilante group determined to thwarting "The Black Dragons." He and his crew take the remaining Black Dragons into custody. Shepherd Book and Jayne discover that the "mystery meat" was indeed smuggled human beings, three of whom didn't survive thawing by the Black Dragons. One of the "mystery meat men" makes it and turns out to be the head of the Black Dragons. Mal and the crew don't get paid more than the half they took up front, but they do figure they can sell the luxury freezers for a pretty penny!

END OF STORY:
- There was much rejoicing! And that was the story of the evening of 13 January 2007 plus few years or so into the future aboard the good ship Serenity, nearly as I can remember it! If the game sounds more like a bad episode of Scooby Doo then I, and I alone, take responsibility for it. Captain Bob has more style than I can impart with mere words. Pesky kids!

------
The right honorable Captain Bob.

Bob made sure that each of us left with a prize whether free admission tickets for one of his favorite gaming conventions, pencils, knick-knacks, t-shirts or more. To learn more about the gaming convention that Bob helps run, check out this URL:

http://www.polycon.org/

Captain Bob also runs pirate games (OF COURSE!) and is a great guy to game with.

-----

Here's what Stephanie wrote about the evening:

Thanks again everyone for coming and especially thanks to Bob & Gale for coming out and putting it on! I had a lot of fun and hope everyone else did too!

Bob, thanks for bringing out your impressive collection of ship set, props, music etc. It really sets the mood! Tony only got a couple early pics (I thought he got some more) so I have none with the props -- though he did get a good one of the ship.

Maks, thanks for helping me pick up the food & thanks for taking photos; did you end up with some good ones? I'm really hoping we end up with a shot that shows some of the great props (dinosaurs, miniatures, guns, etc.).

Perhaps you can E-mail me one or two, please?

I'm looking forward to playing with everyone again at ConQuest Sac, ConQuest SF and/or PolyCon!

Have a great Monday!

GAMING NEWS: Return of Serenity!

.Hi Everyone,

I'm very excited that Captain Bob will be in town tonight... "What?" you say... "Who's Captain Bob?" Well, I'll tell you. Captain Bob is an extremely well known gaming host who throws some of the most well-regarded games in the Greater Northern California area from Kublacon to Dundracon to ConQuest SF and beyond...

I played in his Serenity game at ConQuest SF 2006 and LOVED it! It was a great time and he puts so much effort and time into his games. He has a giant three-level model of the Serenity (the spaceship from the old Firefly TV series) that was removeable with a sand table underneath, Chinese coins, character miniatures, Xeroxed story background and a varity of other fun props and background devices that really brought the game to life. Tonight, he's visiting the Sacramento area and will be hosting a special encore of his Serenity game and I was invited. We'll be dining on Chinese food and it should be a good time to all. Captain Bob will be using the Serenity roleplaying game (RPG) rules published by Margaret Weis if I'm not mistaken. Many thanks to Steph Frelling for hosting Captain Bob while he's in town!

I'll be meeting the local guys for boardgaming this morning... rumor's out that today is Advanced Squad Leader (ASL) Day today, a classic WWII board game. Sunday, I hope to go hiking out along the River and on Monday I'm hoping to see the new film "Pan's Labyrinth"... should be good!

I hope that everyone else has a good weekend too, so...

Happy Saturday and Gut Shabbos to all!

Shabbat Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

P.S.
If you haven't purchased the Serenity or Firefly TV Series DVDs yet, I highly recommend them!

P.S.S.
I have more good news in that I start a new job on Tuesday thanks to a recently earned promotion. Yeah!

GAMING NEWS: Return of Super Mario Bros, Life & ConQuest SF Snippets (4 September 2006)...

Hi Everyone,

Well... it's been a bit since I last posted, BUT I have great news to share...

I finally got the full-time, fully benefitted job that I've been struggling to get for a little over a year since I left my career as a public educator. I started a job with the State of California as a policy analyst this past week (28 August 2006). The contracts are signed, I've been performing my job well and I feel secure enough to publicly announce it.

The new job will involve a few changes for me and one of the most saddening for me on a personal level is that I'm going to have to give up my Wednesday night gaming group at A-1 Comics. Last Wednesday was my last evening with the guys and I took them all out to dinner as a parting gift. I still hope to see Dave, Dick and Kimbo around, but circumstances will keep me from enjoying their company on Wednesdays for awhile.

------

Life's been pretty hectic for me recently too... between aggressively looking for better work, working up to three jobs at a time, trying to support an ailing now-ex-girlfriend, moving to a new apartment, seeing my friend Jon & my baby sister get married, and otherwise having the carpet jerked out from under my feet more times than I can remember.... things have been crazy!

The new job promises for a little more stability and chance to see things right again. Amen!

I went this past weekend to ConQuest SF, which was a shadow of its former self... the Bay Bridge received some much needed emergency earthquake refitting and I think that drove away a lot of potential convention attendees. I still had a good time, but there was a lot of work as well... I hope to write about it sometime in the next week or two... but I have a more important task ahead of me... I need to finish writing a few game reviews and make good to a very patient magazine editor.

------

At the convention, I met a number of cool folks:

- Dave Arneson, the father of D&D along with Gary Gyax.

http://www.jovianclouds.com/blackmoor/

- Ken Hite, author of numerous RPG & gaming books / article sover the years including Chaosium Cthulhu products, GURPs and more.

http://princeofcairo.livejournal.com/

- James Ernest, the genius behind Cheapass Games and other cool stuff...

http://www.cheapass.com/

More information about those folks can be found here:

------

I also met many others including:

- Matthew "Judas" Sicarii, the famed gamer behind the design of Striker III.

http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/ct-striker/

- Aron Clark, well-known Bay Area gamer known for ASQL (Alien Squad Leader), who threw a great Dirtside II game tourney at the con.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/aliensquadleader/

- Ron Plunk, maestro of the cult gaming classic "B-17: Queen of the Skies" from Avalon Hill, who has been transforming a relatively simple number-generating game into a social experience that has been a local favorite for twenty-one plus years!

- Charles Gomez, local gamer extaordinaor, who ran an outstanding Monster Island game... had a blast playing it!

http://www.firefly-games.com/index.php

- Mark Steinberg & Mike McGraw, who ran some of the coolest spaghetti Western gunfight games in recent history...

http://arnicarealestate.com/

- Lawrence Golinowski, who ran the classic convention favorite: Aerodrome.

http://www.aerodrome-ww1aircombat.com/

- The Flagship Games guys, Rod & Thomas who made their well expected and respected magic...

http://www.flagshipgames.com/

- Terry Matheny and his friend Harry, who brought Screaming G.I.s III to the convention...

http://theminiaturespage.com/rules/ww2/sgi.html

- Chad & Alex, who brought Company Commander to the con, which is soon to be published by GMT Games...

http://www.gmtgames.com/

- Peter Bauer, who brought the magic of Starguard to the convention...

http://www.tin-soldier.com/sg/sg1.html

- Simon from Aberrant Games...

http://AberrantGames.com

- Eric from Conquest Miniatures...

http://www.conquestminiatures.com/

- Don from Wartorn Worlds...

http://www.wartornworlds.com/shopping/catalog/

- And so many others!

I'll have to write up a big post later.

But... in the mean time, a little treat for my readers...

Check out this link for Hard Rock Super Mario Brothers!

If you remember, it wasn't so long ago that I wrote about Socialist Super Mario Brothers, so it seemed only fair to share Hard Rock Super Mario Brothers! Enjoy!

.

Hi Everyone,

ConQuest SF (San Francisco) is just around the corner and this news was recently released to the public:

Legendary Guest of Honor Dave Arneson, co-creator of Dungeons and Dragons, will be running a session of his fabled Blackmoor Campaign on Saturday September 2 at ConQuest SF (San Francisco). We are offering a Once-In-A-Lifetime opportunity to play in the 'First Fantasy Campaign', Blackmoor, with Dave as the the GM. Dave invites all to come and visit the 'New Temple of the Frog!'

ConQuest will hold a charity silent auction during the show to determine the eight higest bidders who will get to play in this game. 20 more ringside observer seats will also be available to be bid on. This years convention features our Non-Legendary Guest of Honor, James Ernest, as well as Special Guests Keith Baker, Ken Hite, and Pete Dorman. Dave Arneson appears in part, courtesy of RPG Sponsor Black Diamond Games. End Game of Oakland is our major show sponsor.

Thanks,
Gabriel "Mondo" Vega
Avalon Game Conventions

And for those of you who don't know, I'll be working at Conquest SF and other gaming events hosted by Avalon Game Conventions. I ran the fantasy / sci-fi miniatures area at ConQuest Sac and I'll be returning in the same role to Conquest SF. I had a blast at Conquest Sac and took plenty of photos which you can peruse here:

http://briefurl.com/Photos_CQ_Sac_2006

And there should be plenty of good fun at ConQuest SF 2006. Whether you enjoy board gaming, miniatures games, celebrity talks, a wide variety of vendors or more, it will be there at ConQuest SF 2006!

Have a great Friday!

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

P.S.
The above zombie photo comes from Marcus's amazing "Zombietown" games, which he hosts, along with some friends, every year during Halloween at Great Escape Games in Sacramento. Marcus has since built himself a web site... I highly recommend checking it out here:

HUMOUR: Does a Bear **** In The Woods? And Will a Chaplain See It If He Does?

Hi Everyone,

My friend Mark Steinberg sent me this one:

A priest, a Pentecostal preacher, and a Rabbi all served as chaplains to the students of the University of Montana in Missoula. They would get together two or three times a week for coffee and to talk shop. One day, someone made the comment that preaching to people isn't really all that hard. A real challenge would be to preach to a bear.

One thing led to another and they decided to do an experiment. They would all go out into the woods, find a bear, preach to it, and attempt to convert it.

Seven days later, they came together to discuss the experience.

Father Flannery, who had his arm in a sling, was on crutches, and had various bandages, spoke first. "Well," he said, "I went into the woods to find me a bear. And when I found him I began to read to him from the Catechism. Well, that bear wanted nothing to do with me and began to slap me around. So I quickly grabbed my holy water, sprinkled him and, Holy Mary Mother of God, he became as gentle a lamb. The bishop is coming out next week to give him first communion and confirmation."

Reverend Billy Bob went next. He had one arm and both legs in casts, and an IV drip attached to his wheelchair. In his best fire and brimstone oratory, he claimed, "WELL, brothers, you KNOW that we don't sprinkle! I went out and I FOUND me a bear. And, then I began to read to my bear from God's HOLY WORD! But, that bear wanted nothing to do with me. So, I took HOLD of him and we began to wrestle. We wrestled down one hill, UP another and DOWN another until we came to a creek. So, I quick-like DUNKED him and BAPTIZED his hairy soul. And, just like you
said, Father Flannery, he became as gentle as a lamb. We spent the rest of the day PRAISING Jesus."

They both looked down at the rabbi, who was lying in a hospital bed. He was in a body cast and traction and there were IV's running in and out of him with multiple monitors beeping and glowing at his bedside. He was in seriously bad shape.

The rabbi slowly looked up and whispered, "Well, looking back on it, circumcision may not have been the best way to start..."

And my friend Mojarn sent me this link to a fantasy RPG (Role Playing Game) type joke making fun of the spellcasting requirements in SOME fantasy games:

Have a great day!

Chag Sameach and Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

P.S.
I got the "Rabbi Bear" graphic from a Chabad site about Jewish names that can be found here:

http://www.rabbiriddle.org/rabbi-riddle/01-13.htm

Many Jewish names mean things:
Malka means "queen."
Yonah means "dove."
Dov means "bear."

P.S.S.
My name "Maksim" apparently means "charming" in Hebrew. A friend named Sigal told me that. Now, I just have to work on earning that appellation...

*** Can anyone guess which one of those characters is mine? ***

Next week, Chuck and Eric plan to play a game of "Babylon 5: A Call to Arms." Eric and Chuck are really getting into starship combat games again and are both B5 fans. Eric also lent me his boxed DVD set of the first season of B5 television episodes.
