6mm-Minis

6mm-Minis is Maksim-Smelchak's blog to discuss gaming, miniatures, books, movies, food, Israel, Judaism, life in general and other funny crud. My favorite scale of miniatures is 6mm, which is also called 1/285 or 1/300 scale. I enjoy many different kinds of games including ancients, Napoleonics, WWI, WWII, the Arab-Israeli conflict, Car Wars AKA Autoduel (a sort of crash'n'derby automobile combat game), 6mm Godzilla AKA Kaiju games, and science fiction games. I'm open to everything though!

HUMOUR: Kids, Why We Love Them!

.
Hi Everyone,

Every now and then, I hear a few jokes to good not to share, so here goes:

Normally I try to keep the ol' blog kid-friendly, but even a few "choice words" can't keep the good-natured humor out of these ones:

All sons seem to resent "Daddy" at times:

And we all fear those moments when are children remember exactly what we've said in their presence:

And sometimes children make observations that seem to have a little too much common sense in them:

Thanks, Rafa, for sharing the jokes with me!

Have a great Tuesday!

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

P.S.
I'm currently working on a big game report post at home among other posts so don't worry, game content is on its way. Until then, I can share the photos from the gaming session, which I already uploaded here:

PERSONAL NEWS: Hiking (21 January 2007)

.
A treetop view from along the American River, California.

Hi Everyone,

I got around to some hiking last weekend... on this past Sunday, 21 January 2007.

It was a small group, just the four of us (including a dog)!

Nancy:
Nancy is a spunky lady and has been one of my hiking partners on a number of walks in the past. She's very knowledgeable about organic vegetables, herbs, and homeopathic medecine. At least, that's what we usually chat about on the trail.

Paula & Company:
Paula is part of a dog rescue group and has no less than four dogs and if I heard her correctly... and two of them are three-legged! The dog she brought along on the walk was a sweetheart of a pooch and a happy puppy to boot.
.
And myself (Maksim-Smelchak):

And here I am, a middle-aged guy fighting the "battle of the bulge." It looks worse here than it really is. I just started some new medications for high blood pressure that have complicated my struggle to stay thin. I always like to say that my hard work at the gym and elsewhere has led me to having an "inner tube" rather than a "spare tire." Staying fit is hard work and I have alot of respect for all the folks I see at the gym working on their health.

We hiked along bridge street towards the Nimbus Fish Hatchery, covering about four to six miles in a brisk two-hour walk.

The beginning of the trail looks like this (above), a river access road and a foor bridge at the end of it leading across the river.

And gradually the trail narrows to a bike trail and access road for the Park Rangers (above).

And eventually, we get to my favorite part of the trail, a simple beaten horse path that follows the river with some outstanding views (above).

The park trailway is technically only a strip of protected parkland that follows the river so in some places, you can see the homes of well-to-do folks in the background (above).

The river is simply georgeous this time of year. Despite the early morning wind chill factor, you can see a number of fishermen in waders doing their thing (above).

And in some places, it seems as if you can see endlessly into the woods and that the city has disappeared. It's easy to daydream while hiking in these areas (above).

This is what a happy dog looks like at the end of a walk heading for the cars (above).

Right now, the group is currently shirnking a bit as the charismatic host has taken up aqua-aerobics... Good for her! I hope she meets her fitness goals.

QUOTES: Marcus Aurelius Antonius On the Majority!

.
Hi Everyone,

I've been pretty bust lately although I have a few posts in the works... a battle report from this past weekend's MWS (gaming club) meeting, a movie review, some photos I took while hiking, but that will have to wait until I have a bit more time...

Until then, I'll leave you with a quote I like:

The object in life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane.

Marcus Aurelius Antoninus
Roman Emperor, C.E. 161-180 (121 CE - 180 CE)
Have a great Wednesday!

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

HUMOUR: "A Duck Walks In And..."

.Hi Guys,

Enjoyed this one... ALOT:

A duck walks into a pharmacy and asks the clerk, "Got any duck food?"

"No," says the clerk, "We don't sell duck food."

"OK," says the duck and walks out.

The next day the duck walks into the pharmacy and asks, "Got any duck food?"

The clerk once again replies, "No, like I told you, we don't sell duck food."

"OK," says the duck and walks out.

The next day the duck walks into the pharmacy and asks, "Got any duck food?"

The clerk says, "Hey look, I told you two times already that we don't sell duck food!"

"OK," says the duck and walks out.

The next day the duck walks into the pharmacy and says, "Got any duck food?"

This time the clerk yells, "We don't sell any duck food and if you come in here one more time asking, I am going to nail your little webbed feet to the ground!"

"OK," says the duck and walks out.

The next day the duck walks into the pharmacy and says, "Got any nails?"

"No," says the confused clerk.

The duck says, "Good, got any duck food?"

Many thanks to Dave, the Oz-raelli (Israeli from Oz), over at:

Have a great Sunday!

P.S.
Charley, hope that you and Dave have a good ASL day!

GAMING NEWS: Cats Gone WILD!

.
Kimbo is the "big dog" that keeps the rest of us "cats" in order! Me, especially!

Hi Everyone,

Another week has passed and what a weird week it was... I started a new job on Tuesday, we had Monday off (at least State workers did), saw a foreign film "Pan's Labyrinth" on the Monday I had off, my job had a "Winterfest holiday party" Thursday afternoon, and the flu caught up to me on Friday. Top that off with the date that I have today and the week makes a full circle.

This was my week! I'm the cat... living precariously in a world of dogs.

On Wednesday, I was able to catch up with my mates for a rare Wednesday evening game... one I haven't been able to make since I started a new job around August last year (2006). And unfortunately it might be the last one I'll make for awhile yet since at my even newer job I'm now low man on the totem pole and will have to cover a later shift (I'd hoped to get an earlier one). But these things happen so... que sera, sera! I have to apologize to my friends on Wednesday night since I arrived in a slightly grumpy mood... not the best way to game. Sorry, guys!

We played two games this past Wednesday evening (17 January 2007):

1. Taj Mahal

- Interesting game with a big learning curve. I recommend playing it once through with a partial game before starting a full length game in earnest. It has a large number of scoring mechanisms, which can be difficult for a player to grasp until he or she has played through the game at least once.

- Taj Mahal is basically a card set collecting game, with a map area-to-area scoring function thrown in. It reminds me a little of Ticket To Ride - Marklin Edition. Kimbo was the only one who knew what he was doing and was able to get a very large lead early on that none of the rest of us could close. Mazel Tov, Kimbo!

2. Iliade

- Another card set collecting game with gambits thrown in. Pretty simplistic and very unforgiving since it's possible to get a negative score without much effort. Like many other card games, card counters can benefit from this game by keeping track of the deck. It's not a bad game, but it also probably won't ever become one of my favorites.
- I took an early lead in this game as I quickly saw a good strategy for the game, BUT I'd forgotten that the rest of the guys FEAR and RESPECT me so I was pegged for elimination by the rest of the chain gang. I guess the strategy I'll need to employ is the "last-minute come-around" if I'm to have a chance at winning anymore. The guys were even targetting me over the bigger threats in the game. That's my fault for being obvious. Oh, well. Dave won. Mazel Tov, Dave!

------

Charley wasn't able to make it so I'm including some cat photos that I found around the 'net with this post in his honor. Urah, Charley!

Charley, this Buds for YOU, man!

Charley, I found some of the cool cat photos here:

And, BEWARE!

They weren't kidding when they named the site "Cute Overload!"

------

I hope everyone has a great day!

Shabbat Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

P.S.
And this last photo is for my roommate's girlfriend, Susan, a Scrabble fanatic:

POOOOP for 10 points!
P.S.S.
Thanks to BGG and numerous cat sites around the 'net for the photos!

- MEAL OF THE EVENING:
A delicious spread with plenty for all from Panda... Chinese, of course!

Mmmm, mmmm, Panda for dinner!

BASIC PLOTLINE:
- The crew of the Serenity, Firefly class tramp frieghter, led by Captain Mal Reynolds is hired on fringe planet, "Murphy's Luck," to transport of valuable consignment of "luxury meat" with no questions asked by a certain Mrs. Zayan O'Malley, a petite asian woman of prim and proper dress. Local "fixer" "Badger," sets up a contract for a reasonable price, the crew loads on the "mystery meat" in two large refridgerated units, gets Mrs. O'Malley settled into guest quarters and off the Serenity heads into space with a core planet destination.

Mrs. O'Malley acts very strangely during the voyage, taking meals in her quarters and rarely venturing out for so much as a word. Simon and River notice a strange symbol on a bright red silk bedspread in Mrs. O'Malley's passenger room while bringing her meals. Shepherd Book notices that Mrs. O'Malley sneaks out in the dead of the night to check on the refrigerated units every evening by the clock without exception. Even Jayne senses something amiss inbetween gun cleaning sessions. Meanwhile, Kaylee discovers a number of minor problems with the ship that "just ain't right." And Wash notices that a strange ship seems to be following just out of sensor range, barely flickering onto the screens. All the while, Mal and Zoe have their hands full trying to keep the crew from going stir-crazy.

One evening at supper, the crew gathers for a chat session and begins discussing the situation. They barely get finished announcing that the strange symbol on Mrs. O'Malley's bedspread is the gang symbol of "The Black Dragons," an underworld mafia group... WHEN all of a sudden things on the ship "go bonkers"... life supports fails, artificial gravity begins malfunctioning and a darn fine dinner is disrupted. Simon and River are downstairs delivering a meal to Mrs. O'Malley when the strangeness hits... Mal heads up to assist Wash in the cockpit, Kaylee heads back to the engine room, Shepherd Book and Jayne head down to the cargo bay and... Zoe continues eating... nothing is going to "damn well disturb her fine eat'in."

Captain Bob and Gale, his lovely companion.

Mal and Wash find that the ship is now being closely followed by a strange pursuer and attempt to dodge the offensely-postured stranger by whipping into an asteroid field and attempting to lose him. Kalee discovers evidence of massive sabotage throughout the ship and begins repairs. Meanwhile down below, Mrs. O'Malley quickly grabs a heavy crystal paperweight with malice in her eyes and gives Simon a good "clocking" upside the head, but River is quicker than O'Malley and not only snatches the paperweight from her, but gives her a good knock with the paperweight and promptly knocks her unconscious. Shepherd Book strangley insists that River leave Simon to his care and head to the cargo bay to see her "imaginary friends," but she refuses to leave Simon's side so Jayne and Book decide to check out the strange noises coming from the cargo bay.

Shepherd Book and Jayne bust into a cargo bay that is ALREADY OCCUPIED by a strange armed man and an accomplice. The armed man opens fire and Jayne decides to bullrush the two men and succeeds in knocking them to the floor. BUT, there are two more armed assailants and they open fire wounding Jayne's shoulder. Shepherd Book dives into cover behind some crates. One of the strange men rushes wounded Jayne with a knife and Shepherd Book leaps out with some funky Kung Fu to incapacitate Jayne's attacker. Meanwhile a newly freed-up Jayne, thanks to the Shepherd, pulls out his weapons and cuts down the remaining two strange men with gunfire.

Above decks, River has scampered to the kitchen, gathered some food and prepared to take some more below to poor Simon for no discernable reason when the empty shuttle dock rattles open with more strange men who waste no time in opening fire. Mal joins her in the fight while Kaylee struggles to get the engine running again. Wash barely has time to slingshot around an asteroid avoiding the pursuing ship, BUT, just barely! Simon, downbelow decks, loses gravity and promptly finds himself flailing over the unconscious and abudantly buxom O'Malley. And... Zoe keeps on eating...

Mal manages to take out one of the above decks "baddies" when the other one is knocked aside by a huge Asian man in important-looking silk robes busting out the empy shuttle dock where his pursuing ship had docked and announces that he is the leader of "The White Dragons," a vigilante group determined to thwarting "The Black Dragons." He and his crew take the remaining Black Dragons into custody. Shepherd Book and Jayne discover that the "mystery meat" was indeed smuggled human beings, three of whom didn't survive thawing by the Black Dragons. One of the "mystery meat men" makes it and turns out to be the head of the Black Dragons. Mal and the crew don't get paid more than the half they took up front, but they do figure they can sell the luxury freezers for a pretty penny!

END OF STORY:
- There was much rejoicing! And that was the story of the evening of 13 January 2007 plus few years or so into the future aboard the good ship Serenity, nearly as I can remember it! If the game sounds more like a bad episode of Scooby Doo then I, and I alone, take responsibility for it. Captain Bob has more style than I can impart with mere words. Pesky kids!

------
The right honorable Captain Bob.

Bob made sure that each of us left with a prize whether free admission tickets for one of his favorite gaming conventions, pencils, knick-knacks, t-shirts or more. To learn more about the gaming convention that Bob helps run, check out this URL:

http://www.polycon.org/

Captain Bob also runs pirate games (OF COURSE!) and is a great guy to game with.

Here's what Stephanie wrote about the evening:

Thanks again everyone for coming and especially thanks to Bob & Gale for coming out and putting it on! I had a lot of fun and hope everyone else did too!

Bob, thanks for bringing out your impressive collection of ship set, props, music etc. It really sets the mood! Tony only got a couple early pics (I thought he got some more) so I have none with the props -- though he did get a good one of the ship.

Maks, thanks for helping me pick up the food & thanks for taking photos; did you end up with some good ones? I'm really hoping we end up with a shot that shows some of the great props (dinosaurs, miniatures, guns, etc.).

Perhaps you can E-mail me one or two, please?

WEIRD NEWS: Al Gore, Global Warming & Me!

.
Hi Everyone,

On The Miniatures Page (TMP) today, I read Wyatt the Odd's comments (He's very likeable!) about the horrible cold spell facing California and... I'm pretty unfazed so far. I read the California state weather warning earlier this week, which sounded like we were going to get "The Day After Tomorrow" (Catastrophic disaster and tsunamis) and, instead, it's right pleasant. To read the warning, I was expecting much worse than has actually happened... at least, so far.

A link to the TMP post:

http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=96583

Speaking of Global Warming, that reminds me of Al Gore…

*** Anyone know that he has his own television station now called Current TV? ***

I only know because the other day ago, they were doing "interviews on the street" and they asked my friend and I for interviews on the way back to the office from lunch… we agreed and signed waivers.

It was pretty juvenile… very leading questions about prop 87 (taxing energy producers for being evil capitalists), mental healthcare and… the kicker:

*** "Would you rather see money spent on mental healthcare reform or Girls Gone Wild?" ***
I'm not kidding… they really asked that! I might expect that question from "Slick Willy Clinton TV," but Al Gore?

The "journalist" who interviewed us said that they'd call us if they decide to use our footage. I don't think I'll cross my fingers... I should have gotten more excited about "Girls Gone Wild" like the guys they interviewed before us. Have a great Sunday!

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

GAMING NEWS: Return of Serenity!

.Hi Everyone,

I'm very excited that Captain Bob will be in town tonight... "What?" you say... "Who's Captain Bob?" Well, I'll tell you. Captain Bob is an extremely well known gaming host who throws some of the most well-regarded games in the Greater Northern California area from Kublacon to Dundracon to ConQuest SF and beyond...

I played in his Serenity game at ConQuest SF 2006 and LOVED it! It was a great time and he puts so much effort and time into his games. He has a giant three-level model of the Serenity (the spaceship from the old Firefly TV series) that was removeable with a sand table underneath, Chinese coins, character miniatures, Xeroxed story background and a varity of other fun props and background devices that really brought the game to life. Tonight, he's visiting the Sacramento area and will be hosting a special encore of his Serenity game and I was invited. We'll be dining on Chinese food and it should be a good time to all. Captain Bob will be using the Serenity roleplaying game (RPG) rules published by Margaret Weis if I'm not mistaken. Many thanks to Steph Frelling for hosting Captain Bob while he's in town!

I'll be meeting the local guys for boardgaming this morning... rumor's out that today is Advanced Squad Leader (ASL) Day today, a classic WWII board game. Sunday, I hope to go hiking out along the River and on Monday I'm hoping to see the new film "Pan's Labyrinth"... should be good!

I hope that everyone else has a good weekend too, so...

Happy Saturday and Gut Shabbos to all!

Shabbat Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

P.S.
If you haven't purchased the Serenity or Firefly TV Series DVDs yet, I highly recommend them!

P.S.S.
I have more good news in that I start a new job on Tuesday thanks to a recently earned promotion. Yeah!
